Moody Bible Institute Welcomes Maggie Martensen as New CFO and Treasurer
(Chicago) Moody Bible Institute recently announced that Greg Thornton will be retiring from his position as chief financial officer (CFO) on January 31, 2025.
“As one of the most well-respected and beloved leaders at Moody, I have thoroughly enjoyed serving with Greg and will miss his godly, humble presence,” said Dr. Mark Jobe, president of Moody, as he reflected on Thornton’s 43-year career. “Moody has been blessed with financial health, stability, and wise stewardship under his leadership. I’m excited for him and his wife, Grace, as they transition into this next season of life and ministry, and ask that everyone join me in extending our sincerest appreciation to Greg and committing to pray for the both of them.”
Since 1981, Thornton has held a number of strategic roles at Moody, including leadership of Moody Radio and Moody Publishers. He also served as interim President from 2017 to 2018 before Dr. Jobe was announced as Moody’s 10th President. Shortly thereafter, Thornton transitioned to serve as Moody’s CFO. During his tenure, Thornton was also named the 2015 Alumnus of the Year by the Moody Alumni Association.
“I’ve been incredibly blessed to have been associated with Moody my entire career,” added Thornton. “Moody leaders, including the Board of Trustees, have been extremely gracious to me, and provided many incredible opportunities to serve. It’s been a tremendous honor as well to work alongside so many godly men and women, committed to the shared mission of advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m convinced Moody’s best days are yet to come!”
With today’s announcement, Dr. Jobe also announced that Maggie Martensen has accepted an offer to step into the role of CFO and Treasurer and lead all the financial functions for the 140-year-old Moody. Her role is effective January 21, 2025. This decision was unanimously approved by Moody’s full Board of Trustees during their November meeting.
Martensen is a seasoned financial executive and comes to Moody with 25 years of corporate finance and operations experience. Prior to Moody, Maggie served in financial and operations leadership roles for a number of well-known national restaurant brands as well as management consultancies.
“I am excited for Maggie to join Moody because she is a tested and proven leader who is committed to strong financial discipline and wise stewardship of God’s resources to further grow our Kingdom impact,” added Dr. Jobe. “Most of all, she is a committed disciple of Jesus Christ and loves the mission of Moody.”
For the past dozen years, Martensen also owned and operated a management consulting firm, and even provided key guidance to Moody as leadership made strategic investment decisions for ministry growth.
“I am deeply honored to join Moody Bible Institute as chief financial officer and to support its vital mission of equipping men and women to spread the gospel and engage in ministry around the world,” said Martensen. “I am passionate about the important role Christian education and Bible-centered media content can play in transforming lives and look forward to stewarding Moody’s resources with excellence to advance its mission and global impact.”
