November 8 and 9 marked the inaugural CMB University event. With over 100 in attendance, CMBU brought in industry leaders to encourage, engage and equip future media experts. We loved having industry veteran, Beth Bacall (104.9, The Fish / Atlanta) interview Matthew West, showcasing how to do an artist radio interview. Gator Harrison (iHeartMedia), who works closely with Bobby Bones, shared great insights on radio and how the Lord orchestrated his radio career. Attendees had the privilege of touring Capitol Christian Music Group and WAY-FM. In addition to the educational components, attendees participated in the CMBU Compassion Mission where teams created radio elements in a competition.

CMB Executive Director, Michelle Younkman, says, “The dream for CMBU started back in early 2017 as a desire to invest in CMB’s future broadcasters. We invited those who have a passion for broadcasting to join us. God moved in a magnificent way to bring it all together. It was fun to see the attendees so excited to visit CCMG and WAY-FM. Not only was it a great time of learning and networking, the CMBU Compassion Mission showcased the student’s amazing talents. Plus, those students know how to throw an axe (thanks to Provident Label Group). The future looks bright for Christian music radio!"

What an amazing honor to mentor the next generation of Christian Radio professionals! We’re not just asking the question of where are they coming from. We are doing something about it!

Connecting with people at CMBU who are passionate about christian radio, the same way that I am, and seeing their willingness to help myself and others grow professionally was one of the absolute most encouraging and enriching experiences of my entire college career. I truly feel like I grew so much as a coworker and as a professional just in our short time together because all the mentors were so eager and willing to help, and my team was so enthusiastic about growing and working together.

Thanks to CMBU I had the opportunity to meet amazing industry leaders but most importantly meet and form amazing friendships other students like me. I am now assured that there is never only one thing you’re supposed to do but with radio you have an opportunity to shine in all you do.

Wise, Weird & Welcome: Learning and Leading with the Lepers and the Locust Eaters

We’ve all read the same books about teamwork, leadership, communication, and culture that everybody reads. We’ve mastered Maxwell, studied Sanborn, Sinek, and Sun Tzu, and liberally cribbed Collins in aborted attempts to go from good to great, but…

How’s that working out for you?

What if you left St. Louis with an entirely new lens through which to view and act upon improvements in:

Let’s examine how this all connects together, but approach it from an entirely different angle. Don’t just think outside the box. Kick the box to the curb and start at zero.
