Christian Radio the Driving Force Behind Religion Passing Country as America’s Most Common Radio Format
A new report highlighted by Country Insider shows that religion has now surpassed country as the most common radio format in the United States. Data compiled by Inside Radio using station counts from PrecisionTrak reveals continued strength across Christian radio formats.
The growth is largely driven by Christian-based programming, including Christian AC, Christian CHR, Gospel, and Christian Teaching & Talk stations, which collectively account for a significant portion of the religion format’s total footprint. While country remains one of the most listened-to formats, the overall number of country stations has dipped slightly, allowing Christian formats to move into the top position by total station count.
This milestone reflects the enduring presence and steady expansion of Christian radio across markets nationwide. Michelle Younkman, Executive Director of Christian Music Broadcasters, noted that Christian stations operate with a clear, mission-centered focus that shapes everything from technology adoption to digital growth and community connection. She also expressed strong confidence in the format’s future, emphasizing that there remains a significant opportunity for continued expansion.
