Lessons From the Next Generation

It’s a moment that happens to everyone at some point in their lifetime. Some fear it. Others look forward with anticipation. Perhaps some, like me, are just suddenly hit with the reality in the most innocent circumstances.

You. Are. Getting. Old.

Early dinner at 4pm to beat the crowds. Sounds wonderful. Right? Kidding. There are honestly many days that you might wake up feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the changes in this media landscape that seem to be constantly shifting. No cap my friend. (um, did I say that right?)

While radio stations do face many challenges there is also great reason to be hopeful when considering the future. From outside forces to a shrinking ‘talent’ pool within the industry, there is still great hope and opportunity – some of which can be found on college campuses around the country.

Recently, I had the pleasure of being part of CMBU and had the opportunity to hear from many college students about their desire to impact culture using media of all forms. Students like: Rachel, Jaden, Austin, Jason, Ethan, Owen, Taylor and many many others that I met were eager to learn from those of us already in this industry who have just a ‘few’ more years down the proverbial road of life experience. But I am even more certain that they will in fact teach us a thing or two in the process, and that’s a good thing.

I can still remember the ‘wide-eyed’ enthusiasm that I had in my first radio job. That hope and desire to be part of something that was and is actually changing lives around the world. I do still believe that today and the amazing thing is, so does the next generation that will one day step into your role and mine. I loved seeing the passion for ministry and the desire to learn from so many of the students in attendance.

If there were a lesson to learn or be reminded of, perhaps it is just this simple: Be available. Stay humble. Pray. Repeat.
