CMB Industry Shout-out – Sam Kelly
“Does anyone remember a popular poem years ago entitled ‘All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten’? My mom, a teacher, had a poster of it in her classroom. It shared simple wisdom, like ‘Share everything. Play fair. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess and say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.’
Whenever I listen to Sam Kelly on the radio, I think about how “All I Really Need To Know in Radio, I learned from Sam Kelly.” I had the honor of growing up listening to her on our local station, SPIRIT 1053. I was amazed at how she conveyed such depth of character while simultaneously not taking herself too seriously. She could be playing the “Ah Um” game and laughing with a listener and then pivot to authoritatively sharing the news of the day and then pivot again to authentically sharing her faith in a way I understood as a growing Believer.
I fan-girled a tad when I started my internship, and although she didnt realize it officially, she mentored me by how she carried herself from day one. I’ve modeled my own delivery style after her lighthearted yet intelligent approach. It seems effortless, but you and I know how much care and time she puts into her craft.
I heard this break on-air today (attached) and instantly knew it needed a wider audience. Sam Kelly, I shout you out privately all the time when I blow up your text messages with gratitude for who you are both on and off the air.
