Treat Your Radio Show Like a Front Porch

See if you agree with me. I believe that back decks have ruined American culture. Let’s dive into this week’s Beyond The 615 Column, article # 154.

If you grew up in an older neighborhood in the 1980’s like I did the houses that lined the street had roomy front porches. People had porch swings, grills, and chairs that made it inviting to pop over and talk. Neighbors would yell, “How ya doing” from one porch to another.

BACK DECKS RUINED AMERICA

New housing developments came with fancy back decks and small front stoops. Instead of neighbors interacting with six other families out on their front porch, secluded back decks became the preferred oasis. They provided peace, quiet, and privacy. It changed the way how neighbors engaged with each other.

HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY

Treat your radio show like a front porch and be a good neighbor. Here’s how:

  1. Have a wide welcome mat.
  2. Look out for others.
  3. Be mindful that kids are around.
  4. Offer encouragement and help.
  5. Invite people to stop by.
