It had been one of “those days” – maybe you’ve had one too recently? Unexpected delays, adults acting like children, and the feeling of working like mad all day with nothing to show for it. The whole day had felt like a battle.
Sometimes at the end of a day like that, I need the escape of listening to someone else’s radio station… which for me (true confession coming) is usually NPR or our local pop station. At 5:47 that afternoon, I “accidentally” punched preset 3 and not 4, and instead of Ariana Grande “Thank You, Next” popping out, I got the crosstown Christian music station. And in an instant – literally the time it took me to figure out I wasn’t on the station I thought I was – the words coming from that song were a healing to me.
I can easily get caught up in the mechanics of the job – the doldrums of consumption reports, testing numbers, and chart positions. If I’m honest, those important and necessary details that help me do my job well, live right on the shore of cynicism in my heart. And when I wade out too far into that water, songs can become like disconnected chess pieces that I arrange for impact and strategy, rather than living vessels that carry the message of joy, peace, and comfort to hurting people when they need it. Am I the only one?
I need the simplest reminders the most frequently… that He is doing REAL work – transformational work – in people’s hearts through the music we have the privilege of sharing with the world… and they’re happening in small moments and big moments, by the thousands in every song. Satan can use my moments of cynicism to try to talk me into the idea that what we do isn’t “real ministry”, but that’s a lie. God so gently and yet clearly guided me to rediscover that when I punched a “wrong” preset.
Stay in the fight today, and find the excitement that comes as we get to be a part of thousands of moments where hurting people find hope and joy and peace and comfort every day. You ARE making a difference.
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. -1Cor 15:58
