Oh those Chick fil A cows! And Ronald McDonald. And Fred Bird here in St. Louis Cardinals country! Mascots serve a purpose….they generate excitement and loyalty for the brand.
I was challenged recently by this question: Have we reduced Jesus to a mascot?
Mascots are fun and entertaining. And sometimes…..that’s all I want from Jesus. I want him to entertain me, give me goosebumps, bring a little good luck my way and celebrate the “wins.”
Mascots are often silent…..they get a point across, but their voice is unfamiliar or unknown. They’re not consulted about brand decisions or big game strategies. They don’t call the shots. They simply hang out on the sidelines, rev up the fans and hopefully bring some good luck.
When I reduce Jesus to a mascot…..I become merely a fan. I still call the shots. I don’t need to know His voice or follow His leading. I can just hang out on the sidelines observing and cheering. He has a role in my life but it isn’t one of authority.
I need the reminder that Jesus is more than a mascot for Christianity. He is God. He is Messiah. And He isn’t pleased when we keep Him on the silent sidelines. I like mascots. But I NEED the Messiah. I want to know His voice. I need to hear His voice. I want my life to be marked by His authority.
