Tell us about your station:

106.9 the Light is a listener-supported ministry founded by Billy Graham 56 years ago. We play contemporary Christian music throughout the day with live on-air talent (including overnight hours) and air teaching program blocks for several hours each day. As an extension of our ministry, we also operate a sister station in Knoxville, TN, 106.7 the Light.

Your station’s most successful promotion:

In 2015, we raised money from listeners to purchase copies of a customized version of “God’s Promises for Your Every Need.” We then had the honor of donating more than 10,000 of the books to law enforcement and emergency personnel across our entire listening area. The books have been extremely well received. We recently donated several copies to the Newton Fire Department and Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue department that recently lost a deputy during a search and rescue mission.

Resources your station uses:

We utilize consultants and coaches for our programming staff and also for our ministry associates. Our on-air staff writes their own show prep by remaining familiar with those topics most applicable to our target market. The programming staff holds internal brainstorming sessions to generate ideas for new show content.

One bit of wisdom to share with others:

Let God use your talents and skills to do His work. During our Spring Impact Days we posted a letter written by a 5-year-old listener, Marcus, who donated $2 of his own money. We also talked on air about Marcus’ letter and how inspired and grateful we were for his hard-earned gift. This story promoted great levels of giving, matches, and ultimately turned into gifts totaling more than $30,000.

Share an impactful listener story:

Remember Marriage Conference packages, complete with lodging to several couples. Later this year one recipient sent this message, “both my children have been saved this year and listen to nothing but your station.” She continues, God, through “your station, SAVED my marriage from divorce.”

Tell us why you’re a member of CMB:

CMB memberships have allowed several of our staff to network with other professionals in the field. Our General Manager, John Owens, has been involved in a number of capacities and is continuing to work with CMB in a leadership capacity. Recently our newly hired Social Media manager attended the Momentum Summit, which was helpful in gaining insights into industry-specific social media tips and trends.

Wise, Weird & Welcome: Learning and Leading with the Lepers and the Locust Eaters

We’ve all read the same books about teamwork, leadership, communication, and culture that everybody reads. We’ve mastered Maxwell, studied Sanborn, Sinek, and Sun Tzu, and liberally cribbed Collins in aborted attempts to go from good to great, but…

How’s that working out for you?

What if you left St. Louis with an entirely new lens through which to view and act upon improvements in:

Let’s examine how this all connects together, but approach it from an entirely different angle. Don’t just think outside the box. Kick the box to the curb and start at zero.
