Tell us about your station:

In 1965, a 501©3 non-profit organization called Christian Voice of Central Ohio was granted. WCVO-FM was born in 1972 on 104.9 to serve Columbus and all of Central, Ohio. From 1972-1999 WCVO-FM had a variety of different music and teaching/preaching blocks of programming. From 2000-2003 new leadership ushered in a change of philosophy that trickled up to the board of directors and down to every employee. More Contemporary Christian music was introduced while teaching/preaching blocks of programming were eliminated.
On January 1, 2004 104.9 the River was launched as a 24/7 Adult Contemporary Christian music station. At that point WCVO-FM had around 33,000 weekly listeners. Today, over 200,000 weekly listeners hear the Uplifting & Encouraging™ music and conversations through traditional radio, streaming online or on their mobile app.

Having a workplace culture of “team first”, fun and serving is a priority so that God’s love can have a ripple effect into listener’s lives throughout the community and beyond.

Your station’s most successful promotion:

Our annual Christmas promotion where listeners nominate someone to receive a gift has always captured some amazing stories. Whether it was Home For The Holidays or Christmas Gift, it’s a platform where our listeners can become a hero in someone’s life.

If you have different departments it’s sometimes easy to fall into silos in your culture. For us, we can have competing interests at times with serving our listeners, donors and clients. In 2016, we’re beginning a new initiative of “it’s us…and the rest of us.”

How has your station been impacted through CMB Memberships?

Being a part of Christian Music Broadcasters gives us the opportunity to share our struggles, failures and successes as a small, independent Christian radio ministry.

A few of us have attended Momentum, Quarterly CMB Summits, monthly webinars, Gold member Getaways and have served CMB as volunteers in various roles during the past few years.

The opportunities to connect and build relationships within our industry is priceless. You figure out quickly that whatever you’re going through you’re not alone. There are resources, experts, friends and other colleagues ready to answer questions and help.

Our CMB memberships and attendance to various events have allowed us to see what’s coming next in our industry’s future as well as to hear practical insights to think differently in order to be successful.
