Having been involved with non-profit radio for over 25 years, I’m always looking for new ways to talk about giving. It’s common for me to google “tithing” a couple of times a year to see if a new angle pops up, and this fall, my eyes were drawn to the last chapter of Leviticus.
I’m a pastor’s kid, so my childhood included regular bible studies (usually in those folding chairs with a pop-up desk – none of which were ever left-handed!). I know that Leviticus is a strange book if you don’t get the context. Lots of rules about worship. Living in community. Instructions for cleanliness. Rules on sacrifices. You sort of glaze over if you’re not careful.
But when you take a step back, Leviticus makes a whole lot of sense. God is giving humanity a guidebook on how to approach God in purity so we can experience true fellowship. To worship our creator through every act in life… including what we set aside and dedicate to him.
Leviticus 27:28 says: “But nothing that a man irrevocably devotes to God from what belongs to him, whether human or animal or family land, may be either sold or bought back. Everything devoted is holy to the highest degree; it’s God’s inalienable property.”
This passage doesn’t appear to just apply to the required tithes. It is speaking of additional gifts. This brings my mind to the other things I dedicate or set aside for God, particularly this time of year.
Giving, yes. But also my time. My focus. My heart. My prayers. Things I give up. When we choose to devote something to God, it is HOLY! That’s pretty cool!
I find myself mulling this over as the holiday season approaches. There are so many things that require my time, and so many people to please. Ultimately, if I can be intentional and dedicate a portion of my resources to God, He will use it. It will be set apart. It will be holy. I can have great hope in His ability to use my small gifts for His glory. This makes my offering worthwhile.
In the midst of all the demands this season brings, we can still be intentional and devote a portion of our time, our talents, our treasures to the Kingdom… and trust that God will set it apart and make it holy. What a gift!
