Tell us about your station:

Music. Faith. Community. JOY FM features music 24/7 that encourages a vibrant faith in Christ. Our mission is to be actively sharing Jesus and meeting needs in our community. JOY FM started 15 years ago when the commercial Christian music station in St. Louis was sold. JOY FM is operated by a local board of directors and has no ties to other stations/networks. We launched a sister station 2 years ago called BOOST, which reaches teens and young adults in our very diverse community.

Your station’s most successful promotion:

“Buycott” of Ferguson. The biggest event in our community was the racial tension, protest, violence in Ferguson. We were involved with several community efforts to promote unity and healing. Many of the businesses in Ferguson lost a great deal of income/revenue because people were fearful to shop there. We worked with local businesses and law enforcement to invite listeners to Ferguson for the day. We called it a “buycott” (instead of a boycott). Listeners spent the day shopping, dining, etc. in Ferguson. We handed out t-shirts and were broadcasting live there as well. Many shops said it was their best day financially ever. What a blessing after the turmoil they had experienced.

Resources your station uses:

Jon Hull (Share Media) is our programming/fundraising consultant.
CMB resources such as webinars, summits and conferences.
Troy research for music testing/research.

One bit of wisdom to share with others:

Be intentional about listening to God. It is way too easy to make that an afterthought in our crazy busy lives.

Share an impactful listener story:

Kelsey was a teenager and called in on her way to school to say she was struggling. We prayed with her and shared her call on the air. For the next hour, listeners called in with scripture and encouraging comments for Kelsey. It was so moving that Kelsey stayed in the car all morning to soak in the encouragement. She went to school late, but in a much healthier state of mind.

Later that morning, another mom called in to say that God had used everything shared on the air that morning for her daughter as well. The night before, her daughter said she no longer believed in God. For some reason, her daughter felt compelled to tune in to JOY FM this morning and listened to all of the calls of encouragement to Kelsey. In tears, she called her mom to say that she now knew God was real because He had been speaking to her all morning……her name was “Kelsey” as well.

Little did listeners know that when they were calling in to encourage “Kelsey”….there was more than one! God knew. He always does.

Tell us why you’re a member of CMB:

Wise, Weird & Welcome: Learning and Leading with the Lepers and the Locust Eaters

We’ve all read the same books about teamwork, leadership, communication, and culture that everybody reads. We’ve mastered Maxwell, studied Sanborn, Sinek, and Sun Tzu, and liberally cribbed Collins in aborted attempts to go from good to great, but…

How’s that working out for you?

What if you left St. Louis with an entirely new lens through which to view and act upon improvements in:

Let’s examine how this all connects together, but approach it from an entirely different angle. Don’t just think outside the box. Kick the box to the curb and start at zero.
