Here are 3 reasons why you should submit an entry for CMB Station of the Year:
- Gives you a chance to look back and encourage your team. Each time you go through the process of putting together materials for an entry, you’re forced to go back and look at what the Lord has accomplished through your team. As you pull all the amazing things your station did from the previous year and begin to put it together, you’ll see how God connected each unique piece resulting in a beautiful picture of your ministry in action. It’s so easy to quickly forget and move on to the next thing (welcome to radio), but these reminders can help fuel your team in preparation for God’s future adventures!
- Gives you a chance to deepen relationships with your donors/partners. I’ve had the privilege of serving with some amazing teams who have been awarded Dove, NRB and CMB Awards over the years (most recently The Light FM –WMIT – 2019 CMB Major Market Station of the Year) and when you are presented with an award like this, you should immediately begin texting donors and partners sharing the good news. Make sure you mention to key relationships beforehand that you are a finalist and promise to “let them know” as soon as you find out. Some of those donors will be very excited for the possibility, so offer to text them as soon as the awards are handed out at Momentum. Whether you’re nominated or in the end, given that award, you’ve made deeper connections with your key partners by celebrating with your staff – after all, they are a part of your team too!
- Gives you a chance to encourage your donors/partners. Putting an entry together can take some time, so what do you do with it besides sending it to CMB as an entry? Well, you can use the details gathered in the entry to create another “year in review” type document that can be sent to your partners thanking them for their support and celebrate all that God did through their partnership with the station. Our donor team uses these personalized documents year after year as another touch point with their relationships. You may even send the actual entry and audio to select partners who you know would LOVE to see and hear the audio.
One of the truths we’ve heard and all know about promotion is this: tell them what you’re going to do, tell them what you’re doing, and then tell them what you did. We have a tendency to forget the “what you did” both on and off the air. Whether you win an award or not, use this entry to encourage your team, donors and partners with “what you did” and celebrate together all the Lord has accomplished through your ministry.
Personally, awards make me uncomfortable. Here’s why: As a new Christian I was nominated for a CMA Personality of the Year award. At the time I thought, wow, what an honor and I must be really good to be considered for this award! On top of that, job offers started coming in from all over the place, pride crept in and I really thought I was something else. Funny how God can humble you quickly as you study His word and that’s what He did, gently teaching this new Christian what was truly important.
I really struggled when I transitioned into the CCM format in terms of whether or not to fill out an entry for these awards, but Joe Paulo (President and CEO of HMG – KSBJ) and I had a conversation during our time serving together that really changed my perspective. Joe said to not think about these entries as “it’s about me”, but rather “it’s about what God is doing through this ministry” … and to me, that just made perfect sense.
