Every DJ needs encouragement, but it’s really much more complex and layered than that. See if you agree with me.
There are on-air personalities across this great nation who are pouring out their hearts, making connections, and giving it their all to serve listeners. Many of these same DJs are consistently left wondering if they’re meeting expectations.
They simply don’t know if they’re okay, good, or even great at what they do. Many lack feedback, direction, guardrails, and coaching. Some have not had an air check in over a year. Without feedback even the most confident person can be left wondering if maybe they really just suck.
WHEN PLANTS ARE NURTURED BETTER
PDs wear many hats and are swept away to countless meetings. That’s not an excuse. Imagine hoping that a plant will thrive with little nourishment. See, plant people water, feed, and nurture their potted friends so that they can thrive. The good news is that it’s never too late to give your on-air team a little TLC.
Just like in relationships outside of work PDs can ask their on-air team what THEY would like from the boss. You know, that whole servant-leadership thing that Jesus so gracefully modeled. Find out what the team needs from you.
-a formal aircheck monthly
-a 30-minute casual, weekly meeting
-an encouraging (but specific) feedback text
IF YOU’RE TOO BUSY, THEN WHAT
There are a handful of talent coaches in our industry who are ready to serve you and your on-air team. They’ll provide feedback, encouragement, and much needed nourishment. They’ll pour into your team and fill their emotional tank so that they can better engage with your listeners.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
PDs must find a way to prioritize people over processes. While immersing yourself into music logs might come more naturally, please be mindful that your on-air team’s confidence and growth should be as important as figuring out why a Zach Williams song laid down right after a Rhett Walker song.
p.s. You can find me at CMB’s Momentum 2022 as one of the coaches in the Aircheck Clinic Thursday, June 2nd. I’d love you to swing by and say hello!
