What led you to a career in the radio industry?

I was that kid who talked a lot. At some point I figured I should do something with that, and if I could get paid to talk I would’ve have found my dream job. I got into radio at the small station in my hometown when I was in high school, and as it turns out, it was my dream job.

What advice would you give people new to the business?

Start building connections and friendships with others in the industry and build a group of people around you who will both encourage you and challenge you when you need it. Avoid yes men and constant complainers. Neither will help you grow.

Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?

I’ll give 2 shoutouts to some guys I really respect.  First, a shoutout to Mike Couchman, because he’s not afraid to ask the hard questions and challenge the norm with the end goal of making our industry better. And a second shoutout to Brant Hansen for showing that it’s possible to be yourself on the air, be authentic, talk about faith, and still be amazingly entertaining.

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

We just finished moving to a new automation system at our station. I’m sure that’s not the most significant thing in my career, but the fact it actually worked feels pretty significant to me!

Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener.

There’s always a story about a life change for one of our listeners, but I like a recent story we got from Morgan. She was on a couple hour road trip with her grandson and wondered if they’d find anything to talk about. The song “Raise a Hallelujah” came on, and she started singing along. Soon her grandson was singing along with her, and from there they kept singing with the songs on our station and dove into a conversation about what those songs mean to them and their faith. She sent us a note to thank us for playing the song and providing and moment she’ll always remember with her grandson. Stories like that are a great reminder to me of the day-to-day impact our station can have in someone’s life.
