What is your favorite song?
That really depends on the moment, to be honest. Right now I love FF5’s “Fire on the Highway,” anything from NEEDTOBREATHE and just about any remix from Matthew Parker.
What is the last book you’ve read?
“The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” by Patrick Lencioni
What led you to a career in radio?
I injured my knee playing soccer in high school, and since I couldn’t play basketball that year, I did a broadcast of a basketball game on our school’s radio station. I got the itch, and the rest is history!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
Ask questions. Learn to do as much as you can. Apply what those who have gone before you have learned and taken the time to share with you.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
I’m gonna go cheesy here, but… each person is. If you work in radio, CCM or not, the impact you have on your listeners’ lives is immeasurable. No matter the day part, no matter the role within your company, YOU make a huge difference. Never forget that.
How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
Honestly, when I need to write I usually hop in the car and voice-to-text on my Google Keep app. Something about driving helps me identify more with the listener because it’s something she does so much of. It helps me think of regular life, faith, my family and so on. If I’m staying in the office I shut my door, get quiet and start to see or hear the end result in my head. Then I start the process of getting the project to that end result.
Amazon Echo or Google Home?
I don’t have either (gasp!). Honestly with 6 of us in our home, we don’t need another personality adding to the conversation! (If I were to get and use one, though, it’d be the Echo. Very cool tech.)
What is your favorite part of your job?
Having the privilege of sharing real faith, real Jesus, and seeing Him make a real difference. An encounter with Jesus will leave a person changed forever, and the fact that I get to be a part of that conversation is astounding to me. I’m very thankful.
Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Brant Hansen. He has a way of disarming you, no matter where you come from or what preconceived notions or ideas you may have. You’ll laugh with him, you’ll stare at your radio in disbelief (because funny or interesting is sometimes also really weird), and you’ll find yourself having conversations or considering things you’ve never thought before (because encountering authentic Jesus in our world today can also be kinda weird).
What was your last non-industry job?
I worked at a corrugated fiberboard factory in college. That’s “cardboard” to most people. And just a heads up, those triple-wall sheets are sharp as RAZORS coming off the corrugator. Lots of paper cuts. L O T S.
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
There are many things I’m proud of. But I think the most significant are in the phone calls and emails that come in after I’ve been vulnerable, authentic and poured my heart out on the air, and the person says,” Thank you, that was just what I needed to hear!” Any time God uses me to help a person connect with Him, I’m blown away.
Teach me something I don’t know in the next five minutes.
When Frodo needed rescued at the Ford of Bruinen, it was Glorfindel who came to his aid, along with Strider and the other hobbits. It WASN’T Arwen, as the movies portray. I mean, seriously. Why would Elrond assign his daughter to such a dangerous errand? ALL NINE OF THE NAZGUL WERE AFTER HIM! Nope. Send in one of the Elven-wise, a lord of the Eldar. That’s what I would have done, too.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Interesting question. I’m color-deficient, which means I can see color, it’s just sometimes the wrong one. So I’d pick navy blue. Because almost anything goes with blue jeans. Gotta go with minimal color-scheme risk. (Plus, navy goes really well with all my Cleveland Indians gear. So there’s that.)
