Our Employment and Compliance Attorney reports to the Chief Legal Officer and is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to executive management of Educational Media Foundation and its subsidiaries and affiliates. Clear and prompt communication, high level of initiative, and close partnership with the Chief Legal Officer, Senior Management, and outside counsel are essential. Effectiveness will be measured in your ability to successfully apply legal expertise and insights to projects and the management of relationships both internally and externally. Understanding and daily application of ministry values, mission and biblical principles is key to being successful in this position.
Here’s some experience we require:
Juris Doctorate or similar degree from an accredited school of law.
A member in good standing with the Tennessee state bar association or other bar association. Maintain good standing in the bar association(s) where active membership is held.
A minimum of seven to ten years of experience as an attorney in a firm, Chief Legal Officer’s office, corporate office, or equivalent setting; experience in the practice of general corporate and complex business transactions.
Provide advice and counsel on employment law issues including hiring, discipline, terminations, pay and benefits.
Review and provide mentorship on drafting and development of Human Resources policies and procedures.
Counsels HR and supervisors on handling employee relations matters, including employee counseling, discipline and benefits issues.
Lead or provide advice and mentorship on internal investigations. Recommends and helps implement appropriate actions.
Defend employment related claims, including leading outside counsel in litigation, responding to administrative claims from governmental agencies and settlement demands.
Negotiate resolution of claims.
Assist employment law team in developing, implementing, improving and reviewing legal compliance projects and training.
Prepares, directs and conducts training programs on employee relations matters; for example, employment law updates, discipline, investigative techniques and documentation preparation.
Review and provides input on policies, procedures and specific cases which are impacted by legislation such as FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, ERISA, state Worker’s Compensation and Employment discrimination laws.
Must possess sound judgment regarding appropriate risk tolerance while effectively communicating risks to key stakeholders to drive expedient, thoroughly informed decisions.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to build trust and value others; communicate effectively; and collaborate with others.
High level of integrity; demonstrated ability to work independently; establishing and meeting performance/ministry goals.
