Industry Spotlight – Ty McFarland

Favorite ice cream flavor?
My wife Tonya makes this Cranberry ice cream at Christmas that is wonderful. It’s a little bit of tart cranberry and a whole lot of half-and-half and sugar. From the store? Chocolate or Mint Chocolate Chip.

Who’s your hero?
I think the normal, average person who puts their priorities in the right order and tries to make the world a little bit better place, is pretty heroic. Last week, a guy named Richard Villacres stopped by SPIRIT 105.3. He’s a professional photographer who provides professional family portraits to marginalized families. That’s extraordinary. I’d consider him a hero (www.jackdaw.love).

How many hours of sleep do you need?
8

If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?
Chips and salsa … and tacos.

Hobbies?
Experiences. Doing puzzles with my family, kite flying, camping, reading, beach combing, exploring the mountains, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, islands and ocean around the Pacific Northwest. International travel is always fun, too.

Worst gift you’ve ever received?
None, really. I’m sure I’ve had them, but I’ve forgotten.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?
I keep it pretty basic. About 5 or 6 if you include sandals.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Pimento cashew fake “cheese”. Ghah!

Toilet Paper: Over or Under?
I don’t really care. Probably over. But fun toilet paper fact – toilet paper is the #1 best-selling item at all Costco stores. Over 1 billion rolls per year. At Thanksgiving, Pumpkin Pie takes over the #1 spot temporarily, but TP is king.

On a scale of 1-10, how funny would you say you are?
I am a 3, according to the “are you funny?” test at allthetests.com. I just want to say … I am so disappointed in these results and I KNOW that I am way funnier than that, but the internet has spoken.

What is your life verse?
I love the books of Hebrews, Galatians, and Romans. What God did for us through Jesus is incredible. I am so grateful that Jesus emptied himself, lived in our broken world, suffered and died for us, rose again defeating sin and death, and then gave us gifts that don’t depend on us. Praise God for that. Romans 5:2 is pretty good – “Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.”

We’ve all read the same books about teamwork, leadership, communication, and culture that everybody reads. We’ve mastered Maxwell, studied Sanborn, Sinek, and Sun Tzu, and liberally cribbed Collins in aborted attempts to go from good to great, but…
