Industry Spotlight – Andrea Hirth

What led you to a career in the radio industry?

Growing up, all I ever wanted to do was be a teacher. After one semester of majoring in early childhood education, I quickly realized that was not my passion after all. I was, however, passionate about Christian music. After much prayer, I packed my bags and moved to Nashville to finish college as a Music Business major. I was lucky enough to get a job in the industry right after college and then from there worked on the label side for over 10 years. In 2016 I felt like God was preparing me to walk away from my Capitol CMG family and if I am being honest, I was terrified. I love the Christian music industry and wasn’t sure if I was ready to give it up, but I then got a phone call from Cari Kates telling me about a position that was open with CMB. After hearing more, I knew that this was the perfect spot for me. I couldn’t be happier to now still be able to work with my label friends but also have met so many new radio friends!

What advice would you give people new to the business?

Absolutely, 100% be willing to be teachable AND be nice 🙂 We are all here for the same goal…to glorify Gold and bring His people closer to Him.

Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?

There are so many, BUT I can’t not give a shout out to the CMB team. This year was undoubtably the hardest year of our professional careers with the cancellation of Momentum 2019. The blood, sweat and tears that go into planning Momentum felt meaningless in that moment. But watching our team persevere through a really hard season has been so encouraging to me and has made me want to work even harder to make 2020 the best yet. So here we go! Michelle, Britt, Cari and Jess…the four of you inspire me! Oh….and Mike Couchman, you inspire me too 🙂

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

Golly, I came up with these questions and now am realizing how hard they are to answer JAgain, there are so many things I could list here, from helping launch new artists, to being a part of a marketing team that helped get the music to the masses, to also being a part of an A&R team that helped cultivate some of the biggest songs in Christian music. All of that to say, Momentum 2018 would probably be my most proud accomplishment. It has been the only Momentum that I have been a part of that hasn’t been tainted by a hurricane 🙂 and it was incredible to see all of the puzzle pieces come together for a super successful conference.

Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener.

Man…I would have to say right now that song for me would be “King of my Heart.” There is so much goodness and truth inside of those lyrics. But aside from even that, it is my 6-year old’s favorite song. To hear him sing from the backseat “’Cause You are good, You are good” and “You’re never gonna let, You’re never gonna let me down” brings tears to my eyes every time. I am so thankful for Christian music.

We’ve all read the same books about teamwork, leadership, communication, and culture that everybody reads. We’ve mastered Maxwell, studied Sanborn, Sinek, and Sun Tzu, and liberally cribbed Collins in aborted attempts to go from good to great, but…

How’s that working out for you?

Let’s examine how this all connects together, but approach it from an entirely different angle. Don’t just think outside the box. Kick the box to the curb and start at zero.
