Beginning on May 27th 2021 through July 1st, KSWP/KAVX Christian Radio Stations held three organizational meetings in Lufkin and Nacogdoches in regards to an Emergency Response team, also known as CCERT. The primary purpose of the team is to gather reliable information during a crisis and channel it to KSWP/KAVX where it can be broadcast on the air and on social media channels.
Al Ross, President of KSWP/KAVX, said “We have experienced a wide range of extreme weather in our area. From tornados, the recent ice storms and now into Hurricane season, we know that life-saving communication is vital. Now that our radio stations have backup generators, we are in a place where we can be on the air and be that hub of communication no matter what happens.”
At the meeting, leaders discussed ways to work together and how to best communicate before, during and after a major event. Ross added “We would rather not have any storms at all, but if we do, we want to be prepared. East Texas is the most generous and loving people around. We believe this team will be a great way for people to know where they can respond and help others after an event.
After the final meeting of the year 2021, more than 30 organizations including American Red Cross, Greater East Texas Community Action, the Salvation Army and several Emergency Managements have joined the team.
“KSWP/KAVX covers more than 13 East Texas counties and 4 Louisiana Parishes”, said Vice President, Michelle Ross, it would be wonderful to have a representative in every county so that together we can serve the cities and communities we love. When emergencies happen we do our best work when we do it together.”
Churches and organizations can get information or join the team by contacting Promotion & Community Outreach Coordinator, Sarina Dowlearn, at 936-630-3280 or sarina@kswp.org.
