2024 Radio Podcast of the Year – Judging Forms

Please note that you are now scoring the "More Than Small Talk / KLRC" Podcast.

Below you will see how the podcast answered our questions to support their entry.

WHEN DID YOUR PODCAST FIRST LAUNCH?

January 1, 2019

WHAT IS THE MISSION & VISION OF YOUR PODCAST?

More than Small Talk began with a dream to bring 3 friends together, who happen to be authors and speakers, to share meaningful conversations that would weekly invite a listener to join in the “4th chair.” As co-host Suzie Eller says: “Our mission is to go deeper with women on issues that matter to them. Our vision is to create a safe place to do that.”
From the onset, KLRC viewed its over-the-air platform and its KLRC Podcast Network platform as co-partners in distributing the compelling content of More Than Small Talk.

Produced at KLRC, the long-form expression would be consumed on-demand as a podcast, while smaller, bite-sized content would be featured on the radio platform as small devotional spots. Both distribution expressions would serve as promotional tools for each other as radio listeners are invited to explore the podcast and the world-wide podcast audience are exposed to the KLRC radio ministry. What started as an experiment has proven to exceed our expectations and impact so many lives, including one woman who came to the KLRC Ladies Night Out event (hosted by the More Than Small Talk ladies). She was diagnosed with cancer just one year before. Now living in a new community, she went through chemotherapy treatments without the local support of friends, family and a home church. This lady shared with us that she would listen to the MTST podcast while she underwent her cancer treatments. She imagined herself in the 4th chair as a friend with Holley, Jennifer, and Suzie as she listened to podcasts until she finished her treatment for the day. She told us that that those conversations were her lifeline during the months she endured treatment. When she heard there was a Ladies Night Out event featuring the ladies from MTST, she wanted to sit in that 4th chair in person and meet the women God has used to help her along the journey. That night, co-host Suzie had the privilege of getting to hold her hands and personally pray with and for her.

WHEN DID YOUR PODCAST FIRST LAUNCH?

November 16, 2023

WHAT IS THE MISSION & VISION OF YOUR PODCAST?

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol is not just another podcast; it’s an experience. We set out to turn a well-loved classic into something that jumps out of your headphones and into the room with you. Picture this: a story where every whisper, footstep, and wintry gust is felt as well as heard, performed by a seasoned Screen Actors Guild cast, featuring Sean Astin as Scrooge and John Rhys-Davies as the narrator.

But why?

Because we believe stories should do more than just tell; they should touch, teach, and transform. We also wanted to innovate how a radio station approaches podcasting, so we budgeted to hire great Hollywood talent that delivered performances far beyond what on-air talent could provide.

Our aim was to bridge the old with the new – to open a dialogue between generations, to share a laugh, a tear, and maybe even a new perspective on life’s big questions. It’s about turning listening time into bonding time, and bringing a fresh zest to themes of faith, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

We’re more than storytellers; we’re hoping to be tradition starters, combining the craft of Charles Dickens with the magic of modern sound, to not just speak to our audience, but to move them.

We see this as more than a yearly listen; we see it as a yearly tradition, a part of the Christmas ritual that families and friends look forward to each year.

Our vision goes beyond entertainment; we aim to kindle reflection, compassion, and change. It’s our belief that this podcast can be a mirror reflecting our times and ourselves, urging us all to look a little deeper and discover something new about how God sees us.

To that end, we also created an online companion devotional study on our World’s Biggest Small Group site where people could dive into the deep spiritual themes of Scrooge with friends and family. They interacted with one another as they reflected on the redemption that comes from the Christmas story and take a next step to love Jesus, serve others, and spread hope. We also posted this study on the YouVersion Bible app and saw over 11,000 people join the study there.

We want every download to feel like unwrapping a gift – a gift of presence, empathy, and human connection. It’s our dream that through this project, we can spread a little more understanding, a little more joy, and a lot more hope.

WHEN DID YOUR PODCAST FIRST LAUNCH?

WHAT IS THE MISSION & VISION OF YOUR PODCAST?

The Wally Show Podcast is hosted by Wally, Betty Rock, and producer Gavin. It features two daily uploads: a stitched together replay of that morning’s show, and the Aftercast.

The Aftercast is original content that has not been aired on the radio version of The Wally Show. It was created for people who like the radio show, but want more connective, long-form conversations that can’t fit into 2 minute radio breaks.

We affectionately call the people who listen to our podcast “Poddies.” They are people who truly get the sense of humor and dynamics between the members of the show. Poddies are also OK with a passionate, but not always eloquent, rant from Wally on whatever has him worked up that day.

The Aftercast is a place that doesn’t shy away from honest conversations or difficult life discussions. However, the focus of the Aftercast is humor, so that colors all the discussions, silly or serious.

The Aftercast is not cookie cutter Christianity. It stands for truth and biblical principles. It is a place where questions are encouraged and judgment is reserved.

One “Poddie” put it perfectly: The Wally Show isn’t like church, it’s like hanging out at lunch with your friends after church.
