You Are Doing the Right Thing

You are doing the right thing. Be encouraged today that you are making a difference in lives around the world. How do I know? Because I sit across from patients in my private counseling practice every week that quote songs that you are playing or repeat what you have said on the radio. I see suicidal 12-year-olds that hear “Reckless Love” and want to know what it means. They talk about how their lives have been impacted by “Even If” or “God Only Knows” and they not only talk about the song but share the exact line that grabbed their heart and made them reconsider hurting themselves or something worse. My patients share how something someone they never met who is on the radio said that stopped them in their tracks and convinced them that God really does love them.

Here is the bottom line, we are living in times of struggle. Darkness would prevail if you were not there. Need proof? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 2016, suicide was the 10thleading cause of death overall in the United States. The CDC reports that 47,000 Americans committed suicide in 2017 and this increase is in part responsible for a drop in life expectancy this year. Those are the clinician quotes about our society but what about Christ-followers who have hope in what He has taught us? Lifeway Research, AACC and Liberty University found that 39% of pastor’s polled said that their church had been connected to a suicide in their local community. Lifeway Research and Focus on the Family found that 3 out of 4 pastors knew at least one family member, friend or congregant who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. 74%, about the same number, knew someone diagnosed with clinical depression and 23% of pastors say they personally had battled a mental illness. And that is with the positive message you are sharing.

Imagine a world without it. When I teach those numbers in front of a congregation, I see the dropped heads and pained looks of those that know it to be true. But the good news in all of this is that you are doing something about this. These numbers are not here to scare you, they are here to encourage you. And embolden you to tell your stories during fundraiser (or other times God leads you to) of the life that was saved because God used your radio station in someone’s life. From this professional counselor to you, I say thank you for taking what you have learned and teaching others that they can survive in this world through the Love of Christ.

“But don’t let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers… There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – The Message
