The Humble Broadcaster

I had a young station manager give me a report on a concert held the previous weekend.  He was the morning show host and did a great job and his popularity was growing.

He said, “Barry, it was crazy.  When I came out on the stage to introduce the band, the place went nuts.”  My immediate response was, “The Holy Spirit is amazing isn’t He.”

The young man’s head dropped like a rock, “You are right.  It wasn’t about me. They were cheering God.” I didn’t realize that he was reporting to me how popular he was.  My response was innocent but what a lesson.

A pastor friend, Kendall Bridges, had a moral failure a number of years ago and told me, “Barry, don’t believe the lies people say when they tell you how great you are. I believed them and look what happened to me.”

Matthew wrote, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

We are so privileged to do what we do, aren’t we? We get to watch God do incredible things.  We just need to remember that it is all about God, not us. When God is first in our lives, living a humble life comes naturally. “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised…”  That’s our role in all this.

BTW – the young station manager is doing great things for God in our industry now (I’ll let him ID himself if he wishes) and Kendall and his lovely wife Starla went through tough times but are completely restored.  They planted Freedom Church in Carrollton, TX and wrote a book about their experiences, “Better Marriage: Against All Odds”.
