“Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV)
Verse 3 slaps me in the face, “Do NOTHING out of selfish ambition or vain conceit…” The Message puts it this way, “Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage.”
This will NOT come as a surprise to you, but my standard is so much lower than God’s.
I usually pat myself on the back if I do ANYTHING that’s not selfish, let alone having God’s standard of doing NOTHING out of selfishness. I’ve even noticed that when I do anything around the house, I hope that my wife, Julie, notices. Whether that’s making the bed or vacuuming the house — I make sure she’s aware of my sacrifice. I’m so lame.
So, when God’s Word says do NOTHING out of selfishness or vain conceit it is a high standard of removing all of the need to get credit for something. It’s time for me to raise my standard to God’s…especially when it comes to selfishness and conceit — both at home and in the workplace.
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” May this verse be at the core of your Momentum 2018 experience.
