Doing Christian radio in New England isn’t easy. When I left Way-FM in Nashville, TN to come to Springfield, MA it did not make sense according to what we’ve learned to do in our culture. My wife and I had our first home, our first-born daughter (only 3 months old), we loved our church family, and I was working at a major Christian Radio Network (Way-FM). Why in the world would God be calling me back to my hometown to a radio station that was run by volunteers and, quite frankly, had no real strategy except for wanting to influence people with the Good News of Jesus Christ through Contemporary Christian music? But it felt right, even though it was scary!
So, we moved from Tennessee to Massachusetts with our new-born. We moved in with my parents because I took a pay cut and I was not promised to even be paid for more than a month. It was all by faith. Side note: In 11 years I never went without a paycheck. I am not sharing this to pat myself on the back, but rather to encourage you that many times God will call you out of your comfort zone and will ask you to do things that don’t make sense to the rest of the world. I have been here now going on 11 years and have seen the growth of this tiny radio station to become a real competitor in this market. Were there struggles along the way? Oh yeah, too many to list! But through it all, God was and is faithful!
So, whether God is calling you to do something that seems crazy or if He is calling you to continue to be faithful where you are right now, just know that as you are obedient to follow his leading He will help you! Don’t doubt that you hear from Him! You hear from God Himself. His Spirit lives inside you. My encouragement to you is to keep fighting the good fight of faith!
The enemy HATES what you are doing (advancing the Kingdom of God) and will do anything in his power to throw you off course! Don’t be afraid though! As Jesus told us: ‘In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, because I have overcome the world’. Jesus has won your victory for you! We just need to lay down our agenda for His and watch Him do His thing. The best is yet to come as we hold on to Jesus!
