It was one of the very last days of 2017 when I read this.
If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try. -Seth Godin
If I’m honest now, I was already pretty scared right then. I’d just taken a new job, living in a new state, leading a new team… LOTS of change. I thought, “maybe Seth wants me to attempt skydiving, or get over my fear of snakes!”… And yet as I reread the quote a 3rd and 4th time, I knew what Seth was really calling me to try. It was something deeper, and even scarier to me than all that.
That thing I feared the most? Speaking my mind.
I mean, I could give opinions about a lot of things, shoot my mouth off about a bunch more, and get downright obnoxious about a few select topics. But the really important stuff- in ministry, in work, in life? I intensely feared the vulnerability that was needed to be fully present and completely understood in those moments.
But, in the closing days of 2017, God used Seth Godin to invite me into my terrifying place… making sure the important things never go unsaid.
For you, speaking your mind may be as comfortable as your favorite old sweatshirt… but I’d venture a guess that some other deep fear lurks inside you- like forgiving, or letting someone go, or finally taking your white-knuckled hand off the steering wheel of some part of your life. Perhaps God is quietly speaking this to you, now-
“That thing you fear? Now is the time to try it… because I AM here to catch you, to redeem it, to repair it, to restore it, or at the very least finally grant you some peace and rest from the burden of it.”
Since that day, I’ve tried my best to say what needs to be said in the important moments… particularly to encourage and inspire. It hasn’t always been perfect, but it has transformed me… in leadership, in friendships, and in freedom I have found in being more ‘present’ because that fear is gone.
I invite you into the same place… but to come to this party, you’ve got to be willing, even if reluctantly, to try the thing about yourself that scares you the most. I promise… it’s so worth it.
1 John 4:18- There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.
