Dana and Gerald met March 30, 2017 through our radio station. Their backgrounds are quite different, however. Dana is a highly visible executive while Gerald drives a truck.
Dana and Gerald were introduced during our Spring Share fundraiser. And, like them, our team members and volunteers will all remember their chance meeting.
It was Dana’s first time volunteering in Gift Central. Co-workers said she talked about it for days; nervous anticipation, I guess. Then the day arrived and she walked in.
Training Dana was easy, as she has a ‘heart for people.’ She always looks to serve people at work – in ways no one else can see. Tears come easy, too, thanks to her ‘unto the least of these’ attitude.
As she sat down, Dana put on her headset and waited for her first call. She watched as others spoke with donors taking their gifts. Her heart warmed when the Volunteer across from her began to pray with his caller. “This is going to be great!” she thought.
Dana snapped back to reality when her phone rang. As she pressed the ‘Answer’ button, she took a deep, calming breath.
“Thank you for calling Life 88.5, my name is Dana. Would you like to make a gift today?”
After an awkward moment of silence, Dana asks, “Hello? Are you there? Who is this?”
Then she heard faint sniffles and a weak voice saying, “My name is Gerald. And, I just wanted to call someone before I end my life.”
Working at a Christian radio station, you and I face real-life meetings like this more than most. Countless people tune-in overwhelmed by fear, guilt, heartache, illness, pride, disillusionment and hopelessness – placing a seriousness and urgency to our message. The message of Hope, Love and Peace goes beyond our understanding. But, it’s exactly what is needed in the midst of blinding despair.
Dana was able to encourage Gerald that afternoon. She offered him hope while others found professional help. A few months later, Gerald said he remembered Dana sharing Psalms 55:22, “Cast your cares upon the Lord and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
Not all calls end like this. But I’m thankful God still uses willing radio station staff and Volunteers like yours and mine to introduce people like Dana and Gerald.
