What led you to a career in radio?
I listened to WCIE in the mid to late 80’s as a homeless teenager. That station led me to Christ. An overnight DJ said a prayer that I followed and I said “God, I’d like to do what he’s doing one day”. Well, here I am!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
Be real, authentic, and work hard. Love people. Don’t take things personal. Serve God with all your heart. This journey is rewarding when you view your work in radio as serving the people who listen.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
There are many! Honestly. But, there are two people I have to pick on the spot.
Bill Scott – He not only helps raise an insane amount of support to fund radio stations. He completely loves the people he serves. His gift to lift up and encourage people inspires me to be a better person.
Allen Henderson – If you were to look for an example of servant leadership. He’s not just a GM. He’s a mentor and friend. He invests and believes in his people.
How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
Involve the team. My morning team gets out of the office and connects to dream of ideas and don’t let things limit what we do on the air.
Our promotions department also meets with our air team and Account Executives to dream about our promotions on the station. We leave the station and spend two days together. No idea is a bad idea.
Amazon Echo or Google Home?
Let me ask Alexa.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The people we serve who listen. The awesome people I serve with at the station. And exploring new technologies to position for the future.
What was your last non-industry job?
1987 – Home Shopping Club security and reupholstered headboards at a hotel.
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
A few things stand out for me. All technology based. As our world lives on their smart phones and the new A.I. Technology, it’s important we stay ahead of the game and be where our listeners are living.
Video integration of the morning show. You can watch every morning show break back on video on demand style format. We Skype in interviews and interact our listening family.
Our apps are amazing and the Alexa skills are growing in popularity.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Interesting question for a person who’s color blind. What’s the color of the moon? Maybe that color. Tommy Krammer says to be the moon and reflect back the person listening.
