What led you to a career in radio?
As a little kid, I watched my grandparents build a Christian radio station from the ground up. It’s always been in my life. Even when I “knew” I would go do something else after college, I just kept getting pulled towards it. God brought me back to it!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
Learn EVERYTHING you can. Seek out the people and opportunities for you to learn more. Be a sponge and soak in everything, even if it’s a little outside your department.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
Pretty much everyone I’ve met in my career is my hero, and I try to learn everywhere I can. Top of mind is anyone in CHR who is constantly keeping up with where their audience is going: Notably, Mike Couchman and Boost 101.9, their on air presence, their intentionality in the music choices, and their engagement online and on their mobile app is exciting!
How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
Get out of the studio and spend time interacting and breaking bread with with people in the community and our own coworkers.
Amazon Echo or Google Home?
I like them both, but I have an Echo – mostly because of its integration with all things PRIME.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Experiencing live performances. I never want it to just be part of the job. Music and concerts were always a huge part of my life, and those moments where I forget that I’m working and just get fully into the music like the rest of the audience are the best.
Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Dan Young at SOS paints a picture with words like Bob Ross, happy little trees and all.
What was your last non-industry job?
Pizza Delivery Guy and Electric Sign Surveyor
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
Launching and cohosting a new morning show team from scratch. Hardest part of my job and I’m still trying to figure out how I manage it, but it’s been an awesome ride so far!
Teach me something I don’t know in the next five minutes.
If you sit in the drivers seat and lean your head against the left window, then adjust your side view mirror out to where you can barely see the back end of your car in the reflection, then move your head the same distance to the right and do the same with the other mirror, you will have eliminated any driving blind spots from your sight completely.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
I would probably be some sort of dark blue. Sometimes it works as a foundational color and brings everything together; sometimes it can be attention grabbing and striking.
