Member Spotlight – Rebecca Vassar

What is your favorite song?
Currently, it’s Austin French, “Born Again” (but I have so many favs!)

What is the last book you’ve read?
“How To Say it At Work” by Jack Griffin

What led you to a career in radio?
A simple receptionist position 32 years ago at a small radio station

What advice would you give people new to the business? I really don’t want to be too cliche, but “HAVE FUN!” Find the fun in what you do, and in radio it is truly easy to do. We get backstage passes, trips to fun places, we get to make commercials and the list goes on. So make the most of it. You will find that work is not drudgery when you enjoy it.

Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
Jeff HoweGM of YES FM here in Toledo, Ohio. They have the most difficult job of reaching our next generation of teens/youth. They play Christian Hip Hop/Rap and have Christians calling them telling them they are of the devil. Even so, they keep doing what God called them to do, and they are making a difference in peoples lives because of their determination. They inspire me.

How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
By sitting with someone on my team, or even the whole team and brainstorming. They spur me on to deeper creativity just talking to them.

Amazon Echo or Google Home?
Can you believe, neither yet?!! But hoping one of them finds their way under my christmas tree this year!

What is your favorite part of your job?
Being in the position to help other people, whether it’s partnering with a local charitable organization to meet immediate needs, or calling on listeners to help us fill a truck or 2 to send to a flooded, or ravaged area, that is my favorite part of this job. I love being able to be a part of making a difference in someone’s life.

Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Todd Hostetler. He was my first GM years ago, and he is my mentor. And incredible person, so genuine, yet so talented on air. He has a gift when it comes to interviews, as well as dealing with personnel.

What was your last non-industry job?
Strip, Seal and Waxing Floors! My own company I ran. I love it!!

Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
I would say being the GM of Proclaim FM first, and second, after rebranding the station in 2013, finally meeting and overshooting our fundraiser for the first time (after re-branding)this past Spring 2018. Our goal, $102,300. Our end total: $131,054.

Teach me something I don’t know in the next five minutes.
I am really not sure what you do not know, but I will tell you this, hang out with me for more than 5 minutes and you will definitely learn something. I have spent time cleaning bathrooms, waxing floors, installing tile, riding horses and jumping courses, teaching ebay/online classes at a local college for 17 years, and singing (52 projects, as well as singing jingles) 🙂

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Well, a form of a red and blue of some sort, I think. I love purple, and know that purple represents someone who is compassionate, sensitive, understanding and loves being needed. I would say that is me (at least I hope so!)
