What led you to a career in the radio industry?
It all started in college. I joined my university’s student radio station looking for a fun extracurricular activity. Turns out it was a little too much fun. By the next semester I had changed majors and was aiming for a radio degree. I also did some radio internships and a student job with the Faith Radio Network during my college career. Upon graduating, I joined the team at Life 97.3 in Duluth, where I still am today!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
I’ll be honest, I feel like I’m pretty new to the business myself and thus not really qualified to answer this . . . but I’ll give it a shot. Take opportunities to branch out and try a little bit of everything, even if something seems outside your area of expertise. You’ll develop new skills, and maybe even discover new passions along the way. Working at a station with a small staff is great for this.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
I’d like to shout out Matt Deane, the station manager at Life 101.9 in Waterloo, IA. Matt has made an impact on me at a personal level—he mentored me and helped get me where I am today in my career. I learned so much about programming from him and would not be where I am without his help. He’s also making a difference in his market. Through his leadership, the team at Life 101.9 is doing some really cool stuff, like collecting gift cards for a local children’s hospital. Making a tangible impact like that—taking God’s love beyond just what we share on the air—is really cool.
Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
I’ve been blessed to be a part of some really cool growth at Life 97.3. Starting my career somewhere that’s had an opportunity to expand into new communities, grow financially, and grow closer and more skilled as a team has been a really neat thing.
Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener.
This isn’t exactly one of those stories where I had a single big “moment” with a song . . . but there’s something about Elevation Worship’s “Do It Again” that really connects with me. Every time it’s on, my drive turns into a little worship session, and that’s always wonderful.
