Member Spotlight – Mandy Young

What is your favorite song?
“By My Side” – Ben Harper. It’s my wedding song. We just had our anniversary so I’m feeling all romantic…

What is the last book you’ve read?
Soul Survivor by Philip Yancy – so good for anyone who has felt far from God or the church.

What led you to a career in radio?
Boys. That’s the truth. I was going to school to become a teacher at Cedarville University and was just not loving it. I went to the back of the school catalog and looked at all the majors to see which one had the most boys in it. (sorry Mom and Dad) It was engineering and broadcasting…that was an easy choice J I took a sports broadcasting class and I was hooked.  Side note: never got one date but fell in love with radio.

What advice would you give people new to the business?
Listen. A lot of us are in a business where our job is to talk…but I think listening is just as important. Listening to advice of peers or coaches. Listening to other show to learn and grow. Listen to our own shows to make ourselves better. As good as you are at talking…you should be equally as good at listening.

How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
Find a spot where nobody else is and shut the door. For real ? I am an introvert….too much people time and I feel zapped. If I can get alone in a room for 10 minutes…I feel so much better.

Amazon Echo or Google Home?
Echo…but that’s mostly because I don’t know what a Google Home is 🙂

What is your favorite part of your job?
This is going to sound cheesy, but I don’t care. I love all the parts of my job. I do. I love the parts in the studio and the parts outside of it. I love finding creative ways to connect with my listeners and helping my staff find ways to do the same.

Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
The people pleaser in me wants to name all of my favorites here and not leave anyone out…I love so many! That’s my creative way of avoiding this question.

What was your last non-industry job?
Server…and I was just ok at it. I waitressed at night and worked full time during the day when I first started in radio. I am tired just thinking about that.

Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
Every team show is an accomplishment. I have had some great ones in my years doing morning radio. When you spend 8 hours a day with someone…most of it locked in a studio…being able to find ways to work together and put out quality content day after day….that’s an accomplishment.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
I was just coloring with my daughter the other day and she asked why there wasn’t a hot dog color. 🙂 She’s right…there’s not. I’d be that. The perfect hot dog shade.
