What led you to a career in radio?
One Sunday morning I felt God calling me to the ministry. So during the invitation I went forward and committed my life to full time ministry. I knew I wasn’t supposed to be a pastor, but I knew I’d end up at a ministry doing something. A month or so later I saw a radio station was hiring for a promotions manager in Indianapolis, I applied, and was hired!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
You better make sure you’re “called” to this business. Make sure you aren’t in it for the money, fame or fortune (haha). Always make sure you remember why you’re called. What we do isn’t heart surgery. But we help spread a message that changes the heart.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
Michael Tedesco! One of the most creative and talented people I’ve ever met and worked for. No matter the environment in which he works, he constantly keeps a positive attitude, never loses his focus, and consistently changes lives for the better of those he is around and of which he is in charge.
How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
I take a walk and then change my scenery. I change everything. I listen to something different, I sit somewhere different, and sometimes I’ll even change clothes (into something more comfy).
Amazon Echo or Google Home?
What is your favorite part of your job?
Getting the phone call or email from the Underwriting Partner saying that the campaign we just aired was a success. Knowing they trusted my advice and it worked is an amazing feeling.
Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
My favorite on air personalities were John and Sherry Rivers. When I listened to them I ALWAYS felt like I had a behind scenes pass to the Christian music world. They were the best!
What was your last non-industry job?
I was the Operations Director and founding partner of a body armor company that sold (and still does sell) armor to the military.
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
I’ll never forget the first email we received when a soldier purchased our body armor and he was shot in the war in Iraq. He attached a picture of the armor with the bullet lodged in it. His life was spared and I played a tiny part in it. I was honored.
Teach me something I don’t know in the next five minutes.
Ronald Reagan was a lifeguard during high school and saved 77 people’s lives.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
