What led you to a career in the radio industry?
I started at 18 working part time at KKRE in Nederland TX. My dad made a career in Christian Radio, and I really needed some direction in my life. That’s where it all started. My dad was the GM and I did weekends and fill in work for about 2 years.
What advice would you give people new to the business?
Set goals for what you want to do in the future. Never rush those goals. Study those who have been successful at what you want to do, and work hard. Take your time, don’t get frustrated.
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
Rick Hall has made a big difference in what’s happening at Star in New York in the last few years, really shaking up his currents and playing them more, I’m hearing from stations all over the country that they are now increasing their current spins per week with the hopes of increasing their numbers. Rick was the first to really take the chance on increasing those spins. It paid off for Star!
Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
Tough one. I’ve been fortunate to be a part of many great things in the industry, from launching some of the best-selling artists in our genre at radio, to charting system transformations, to being a part of the team of promoters who started digital single delivery to all our stations. Christian Radio was the first format to adopt digital delivery, it started with Promo Only, which later became PLAYMPE, and the work that a small group of promoters did to launch that service in our format is for sure on of the biggest things I’ve been a part of. Oh, and I was on the original planning team for CMB Momentum, so there’s that too! I don’t think we can really take credit alone for any of the changes that have helped us be a better more efficient industry, but I have enjoyed playing a small part in the bigger story of the Christian Radio industry.
Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener.
Too many that I’ve had the privilege to promote to call just one song out as THE song that made a difference. My earliest memory of a song that emotionally got me every time as a young man, and still does today, is a Bill and Gloria Gaither written song that was in the hymnal at my church. It’s also been covered by artists several times, “Because He Lives”. Just the reading of the lyrics still get me. Very powerful and comforting truth. I didn’t find faith until the age of 21, but that song really had an impact on me during my teenage years. Part of the catalyst of my faith.
