What led you to a career in radio?
I sort of fell into it. I pursued vocal performance and spent four years traveling in two different groups all over the country. In between ‘gigs’ the first Christian radio station in the state of Delaware, WXPZ, was just going on the air and I offered the owner, Bill Sammons, my help while I was in town for a few months, as a receptionist if he needed help. He put me on the air;)….within the first year I began hosting mornings with him…that was 26 years ago! 7 years ago we began doing mornings on WKNZ, 88.7 The Bridge, also in Delaware. I never saw it coming…but I’m so glad it did!
What advice would you give people new to the business?
Be yourself. Be a friend to her on the other side of the radio. Play a song that she loves and talk about what she cares about. Your platform and circle of influence are given to you by God so ask him to help you daily to love and serve them best!
Give a shoutout to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?
Jason Sharp. I met him when he had just graduated from college and beginning his career in radio. Over the years he’s developed a great ability to encourage and inspire fellow communicators helping them to sharpen their skills and deepen their walk with Jesus.
How do you refresh your creative energy at work?
I push away from the desk and head to our listener letter board. Its covered with letters, cards, printed copies of emails and social media posts from our listeners sharing stories of how the station has helped them, encouraged them, inspired them, led them to Jesus. Reading how Christian radio has impacted listeners can help trigger creativity.
Amazon Echo or Google Home?
Alexa is my friend!
What is your favorite part of your job?
The outlet I have been given for encouragement. Whether its on the air, with our staff, at an event, online through social media posts or blogging its an honor to be able to encourage others to be hopeful. to know they are “seen”, and they are loved.
Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Wow that’s a tough one. I have a lot of favorites. One of my most favorites is Steve Swanson. He’s the trifecta of communicators! He loves Jesus, loves people and has a passion for doing great radio that brings all three together. He’s spoken life to me on so many occasions and I appreciate his warm communication skills both on the air and in person that makes everyone feel at ease and valued.
What was your last non-industry job?
I served a growing church as Administrator for almost 10 years that began with about 100 people in one service to over 1600 people in four services every weekend. God used that time to build people skills and I discovered a passion for leading ladies bible studies during that time as well.
