What led you to a career in the radio industry?

I went to college hoping to find a career that had potential to make some money and started out in computer science. I had never touched a computer in my life (that may sound like I’m old, but I’m not, ha). I had no idea on what I was doing and was failing! I thought about quitting school. During this time, I had a friend on the radio. I thought, “that’s pretty cool” so I gave it a shot. While pursing that, I felt God calling me to do this as a career. I went from struggling in school to making the Dean’s list.

What advice would you give people new to the business?

Always be teachable.

Give a shout out to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?

I would like to give a shoutout to Jon Hull. I have always looked at him as a true servant. He has had an imprint on several branches of the ministry that has affected lives for Christ through KSBJ, their mentoring program, and even NGEN Radio. I know there was only one perfect person but as a passionate Christ follower, there’s a verse that Jon embodies, 1st Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ”.

Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener.

MercyMe’s song “Bring The Rain” had a huge impact on me. We all may know the chorus,

Bring me joy, bring me peace, Bring the chance to be free, Bring me anything that brings You glory, And I know there’ll be days, When this life brings me pain, But if that’s what it takes to praise You, then Jesus, bring the rain”.

We all know change can be really hard but about six or seven years ago, I couldn’t get the chorus off my mind. Especially the lines, “Bring me anything that brings You glory even if it brings me pain”. I felt like God was calling me again to surrender, no matter the cost. I had no idea at the time, that the process of surrendering was preparing me for what was ahead, losing my job of twenty-one years. My family faced some serious financial hardships, but God was in that too. I would not have chosen, on my own, to step out of my comfort zone but God had better plans. I really believe God has used that time period to lead me to where I am today, influencing two radio stations, WFCJ and WEEC at Strong Tower Christian Media.
