What led you to a career in the radio industry?

From the first time I ever heard a jock on the air, I knew I wanted to be on the radio.  I started out cleaning and answering phones at my local CCM station, KLYT (Albuquerque, NM), when I was 16. The next few years would be rough for me, but God used the people at that station, not only to begin my career in radio, but to mentor me, pray for me, and ultimately give me a chance on the air! I went on to become MD of that station in my early 20’s.  A move to Nashville led me to other parts of the industry, and now I find myself back in radio in Houston.  I have loved everything I’ve gotten to do so far, and my only complaint is that I can’t do it all at once!

What advice would you give people new to the business?

This business is all about relationships. Never pass up the opportunity to meet someone new and start a new friendship.  Invest in people and allow them to invest in you as well.  You never know when your paths will cross again later.  Always remain teachable & humble, looking for opportunities to learn and expand your ideas.

Give a shout out to someone who is making a difference in radio and what are they doing to make an impact?

I want to shout out leaders like our stations own President Joe Paulo and of course, Tim McDermott before him, Boost’s Sandi Brown, Hot’s Jim Hoge and other leaders in Christian Radio that believe we can change the game and reach a whole new sect of people by launching and funding stations that play Christian Hip Hop.  This is only the beginning! 🙂

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

It is hard to choose, but I’ve got to say being a part of bringing a CHH station to the FM dial in Houston and seeing it impact the city has been absolutely amazing.  I’m humbled by what God is doing thru NGEN and have loved working alongside such an amazing team of people here.

Tell us about a story of a Christian song that made a difference in your life or the life of a listener?

Back in 97 or 98, I wasn’t completely sold yet on Christian Music.  A song came on the radio By Seven Day Jesus called “Butterfly”, for some reason God used this song to change my heart and mind and go all in.  I will forever love that song and thank God for it.  The lyrics “I wanna lose this old cocoon, I wanna do it soon and fly away” is what the Holy Spirit used to break me out of my cocoon and become that “Butterfly”.  The rest is history.
