May 15, 2013

Christian Music Broadcasters has re-vamped the entry procedure for the 2013 Station of the Year competition. Stations will no longer need to put together an elaborate written entry and submit it for judging. All written information will now simply be entered into an on-line “form” on the CMB website. cmbonline.org No more pictures, no more elaborate layouts, just a written record of what your station has done in the past year in the areas of ratings, community involvement, new media and industry leadership. Audio portions of each entry will be uploaded directly to our website. Simply CLICK HERE and follow the step by step instructions.

Eligibility dates for the 2013 awards will be May 1, 2012 thru April 30, 2013. Stations wishing to enter the 2013 competition will only be allowed to submit airchecks, ratings information and station activities which took place between those dates. Stations wishing to enter the competition must submit their entries by June 14, 2013.

Voted on by a panel of judges within the radio industry, the Christian Music Broadcasters Radio Station Of The Year Awards are presented to stations which show outstanding achievement in on-air presentation, community service, ratings, new media and industry leadership. One award is given in each of four market categories – Major, Large, Medium and Small. The 2013 Christian Music Broadcasters Radio Station Of The Year Awards will be presented Wednesday evening at the CMB Networking dinner to be held at Momentum 2013, September 4-7 at the Disney Yacht & Beach Convention Center in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

It is CMB’s desire for college students to learn from the best at Momentum 2013. In taking that relationship further, we’re looking for a few professionals that would be willing to be a mentor to a college student during the week. We know (and remember) that it is very intimidating to be in a place where everyone seems to know each other. Your involvement will be meeting with them once or twice during the week, introducing them to a few of your colleagues that would make sense for what path the student is interested in and giving them a few tips throughout the week.

If you’re interested in investing in the future of Christian radio broadcasting by being a MOMENTUM MENTOR, then CLICK HERE for more information on how to get connected!

Here are a few examples of the power of giving back to the future of CMB!

Brittany Whatley
Promotions Director, KSBJ/Houston

“When I was just getting in to the Christian radio industry I paid my own way to go to GMA. I’m so thankful that Theresa Ross (91.7/The Promise) took me under her wing and introduced me to her friends and colleagues. I feel it’s my turn to pay it forward and help young broadcasters on their journey… because let’s face it, they could be my boss in a few years!”

“John Butler at Curb Records took the time to invest in me by introducing me to most of the people I now know at numerous Christian radio events. The time he took with me is now something I want to give to others as I know what it’s like being the new face in the room.”

“My academic advisor agreed to send me to GMA when I was in college. Not knowing anything or anyone, I prayed for a friend. I met Jeff Cruz (PD at WMHK/Columbia, SC) and his wife right away and they welcomed me with open arms. That began a friendship…which turned into an internship later that year…which turned into my first job out of college…which has turned into a career. Jeff has been there through it all. And it started with a simple prayer.”

Are you still doing “promotions”? Or have you made the move to “engagement”?

What’s the difference, you ask? Simple: Promotions is about US, Engagement is about THEM.

Traditional promotions are created to get the station noticed – get the call letters out, create visibility, let the community know who you are… basically it’s a “push” approach.

Engagement, on the other hand, is about building a real relationship with your listeners. This is more of a “pull” approach – in other words, drawing her in to you and your station, as opposed to pushing your station out to her.

Yes, engagement is harder and it takes longer. But its effects are greater and they last longer.

When I was at KTIS, the perception was that I hated contests. Not true! I just didn’t like contests where the main purpose was to acquire new names or satisfy an agreement with a label or a sponsor. Those are great OUTCOMES, but they’re not great DRIVERS. Will you get a lot of calls or website “hits” for a contest? Sure! Are those folks engaged? Not really…

Should you quit doing contests altogether? No! But I’d challenge you to try “tweaking” them to make them less about the prize – or reevaluate what the “prize” really is!

A great example is a contest that KTIS was doing several years ago called The Family Name Game. Each day, a different name was shared on the morning show. If you had a child with that name, you were encouraged to call in, and if your story was played you won a CD. We decided we’d tweak the contest, and just quit giving away the CDs. (Not a popular decision with the on-air folks…)

You know what we found? The listener didn’t miss the CD at all! Why? Because that wasn’t the real prize. The REAL prize was the opportunity to brag about their kid on the air – after which, we’d send them an MP3 of the clip as a keepsake. Were those listeners engaged? You bet! And guess what? When they shared the clip with other family members, they were actually PROMOTING KTIS. Win-win.

I challenge you to evaluate your “promotions” and see if they can’t be tweaked in order to go deeper with your listener. I also invite you to download the free handout “Moving from Promotions to Engagement” on my website.

Radio OR Digital vs Radio AND Digital

Many think the future of radio is the digital dashboard in a car. Some think it’s an app, an FM radio cell phone chip or a website where you can skip songs. It’s not radio OR digital. It’s radio AND digital!

As radio personalities, we need more of a holistic approach. The digital dashboard is just one piece of the pie. I don’t think radio transmitters are going away anytime soon, but we do need to pay attention to the way tablet & smartphone use has boomed. Tablets & mobile can be additional distribution channels for our show. Digital can enhance what we do on the radio! We can re-purpose our audio pretty easily. Let’s brainstorm & innovate around that. Let’s look for ways to use digital and radio to connect listeners with God and with other Christians. Let’s set our own course as a CCM industry rather than simply follow what Clear Channel, Cumulus & CBS are doing with digital. Sure we’re going to use their tools when they help enhance our company’s vision, but we don’t have the same mission they do. Let’s build a strategy that’s really centered around our love for our listeners.

I want to reach more people with the Gospel & the hope Jesus provides. I’m consistently looking for more distribution & connection options that will help our radio station reach people where they already are… and look forward to where they are going.

I think Christian radio has a competitive advantage right now. We actually have a mission behind what we are doing. Our mission trumps ad dollars, sales clients and ratings. The heart behind Christian radio is to reflect Jesus and help listeners connect with him. For most mainstream companies, generating a profit is the sole reason the radio station exists. With that said, our format really is about creating genuine content, personally connecting with listeners and building/facilitating community.

Christian radio is naturally more listener focused than any other format because of the mission behind it. Let’s think about how to use technology to make that relationship even deeper.

Scott Herrold is the Program Director & Morning Show Host for SOS Radio. (It’s a network of 35+ radio stations.) He was named one of Radio’s Best Program Directors by Radio Ink this year. He’s worked in both Christian & mainstream radio and he’s one of the founders of www.CreativeCardio.com. Edison Media Research also listed Scott as one of Radio’s 30 Under 30 Shining stars two different times.

Connect with Scott@CreativeCardio.com

*Scott moderates the CMB DJ Forum!
The DJ forum is a place for CCM radio personalities to share ideas, talk about challenges and discuss strategy for their shows. We love it when you post topic ideas that worked on your show. We love it when you ask questions. We love it when you share articles that challenge other radio personalities to step up their game. We live in a changing world. Social media & mobile devices are challenging the way we connect & interact with listeners. They are giving us new opportunities to make our shows 3 dimensional. We hope you’ll join the DJ forum and be part of the discussion! Sign up for the DJ forum HERE today.

Originally printed – USA TODAY, April 16, 2013
In praise of shift by Focus on the Family: Column

By Tom Krattenmaker:

Evangelical group has woken up to the downside of culture wars and getting back to basics.

“We’ve said we hate the sin and love the sinner,” the evangelical speaker said <http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/09/us/focus-on-the-family-transforms-its-message.html?_r=0> to an auditorium of university students and professors. “But … sometimes we hated the sinner, too, and that’s not the Gospel.”

The man making this astonishing admission? Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, the faith-and-family organization based in Colorado Springs that has been riling secular progressives, including yours truly, for many years.

That Daly would let his guard down like this tells you a lot about the change breaking out in evangelical America. It also explains why I brought not just questions but an olive branch as well when I journeyed to Focus on the Family as part of the research for my new book. One good turn does deserve another.

Under the decades-long leadership of James Dobson <http://www.focusonthefamily.com/about_us/james-dobson.aspx> , the group became a catalyst for the Christian right political movement <http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/10/news/la-pn-focus-family-jim-daly-20121109> and took center stage in the culture wars. “Anti-woman,” <http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2010/02/02/focus-family-funding-extremism-millions-dollars-a-time/> “anti-choice” and “anti-gay” <http://msmagazine.com/blog/2011/07/09/toms-joins-forces-with-anti-gay-anti-choice-group/> are the terms often marshaled in liberal discourse today oftentimes when the organization is mentioned. Those plus that ultimate pariah designator: “hate group.” <http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/05/23/978492/-Hate-group-Focus-on-the-Family-admits-defeat-on-gay-marriage>

But the more I have learned about “Focus 2.0 <http://community.focusonthefamily.com/b/jim-daly/archive/2011/07/08/guest-blog-fotf-featured-in-christianity-today.aspx> ,” as some call it, and the more I’ve heard about the changed tone and different emphases coming out of Colorado Springs in the new Daly era, the more I’ve complicated my opinion of the group.

Joining forces

Like many evangelicals, the group has woken up to the downside of the culture war politics and is getting back to basics — which means, in Focus’ case, serving families in the name of Jesus. In addition to de-emphasizing Christian right politics, Daly is reaching out to people who thought they had permanent places on the organization’s enemies list. He publicly credited President Obama for being a good father <http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/god-and-country/2009/06/16/new-focus-on-the-family-chief-wants-more-families-like-obamas> and husband, and he has stood with Christian leaders of varied stripes in calling for humane immigration reform <http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/06/conservative-ministry-immigration-reform.html> .

I was impressed to learn of Daly and a progressive publisher in Colorado Springs joining forces <http://www.fox21news.com/news/story.aspx?id=772453#.UWb4MqLvuSp> to put on a benefit concert for those whose homes were destroyed in the Waldo Canyon wildfire. I was touched when I learned of the hospitality Focus extended to Soulforce when this gay-rights advocacy organization from Texas came calling last year as part of its Equality Rides <http://www.soulforce.org/> tour — an encounter that ended in hugs and mutual promises to speak of one another in more respectful terms.

Daly’s acknowledgment of fault evokes a wider and welcome development on the evangelical landscape. As these groups steer themselves out of the culture wars, “new evangelicals” are making disarming confessions and apologies. They are repenting of ungenerous rhetoric about their political and cultural rivals, and saying “sorry” for being part of a movement that seemed to care more about enhancing their power and prerogatives than loving their fellow citizens as their savior taught.

Wrong to criticize

Sure, I had some hard questions for Daly when I traveled to Colorado Springs, most having to do with his organization’s continued opposition to gay rights. <http://www.npr.org/2013/03/24/175173113/for-evangelical-leader-gay-marriage-outside-of-gods-design> But, moved by the confessions I’ve been hearing from Daly and many of his fellow evangelicals, I came with some admissions of my own to make.

It was wrong, I said, that many on my side of the political/cultural tracks continued to demonize the organization as all bad and only bad. Same for the way many progressive activists define Focus on the Family as an anti-gay “hate group,” even though the widely respected Southern Poverty Law Center says the group does not deserve <http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/hate-map#s=CO> that damning designation. Reducing Focus on the Family to these negative labels, I told Daly, “is wrong and unfair. I would not want to be subjected to that, and I’m sure you don’t.”

I disagree with their position on gay marriage and many other issues. Yet I contend that the good being done by Focus on the Family is still good. And while I hope for the day when the group stands up for marriage equality, I can appreciate the steps it has taken to treat gay people and their allies with a new respect.

My call to progressives and seculars: In our understanding of evangelical America, it’s time for an exercise in disaggregation. Not all evangelicals are the same; not everything they do, and believe, is harmful nonsense. Many of the organizations and people we stereotype are changing. And those confessions and apologies we’re hearing? They sound pretty good. Count me as one who is willing to accept them — and reciprocate.

Lauderdale.

Calvary Chapel was named by Church Growth Magazine as one of the fastest growing churches in the nation, ranking eighth in size. Starting from a home fellowship of just four people, Pastor Bob has received an invaluable education in what God can do when given full reign in the hearts and lives of God’s church.

At the age of 24, Bob left an executive position in the music industry to serve as an associate pastor with Calvary Chapel of Las Vegas. In 1985, he and his wife, Diane, moved to South Florida and began Calvary Chapel of Fort Lauderdale. Bob enjoys mining God’s Word and discovering relevant ways to communicate timeless truths to our modern day and age.

Through the media ministry, Pastor Bob’s messages are heard nationally on The Active Word via radio and television. Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale also outreaches in over 80 different ministries from foster care to missions, from benevolence to nursing homes, and from local broadcasting to national radio station outreaches.
