“Our community is in a giving slump.” “Our crops are down this year.” “Nobody cares about this Christian radio anymore.” Don’t buy the negativity lines. Those are excuses. We are closing that department down.
You can succeed. You can prosper. There are plenty of organizations whose budget is being exceeded. You can be one of them. IF…you are willing.
From time to time, I hear this: “Brother Jack, we believe it is all in God’s hands. We just need to pray more.” This boils my blood. Really? First, if you really believe that, are you fervently praying? Every day? Your team? Is your board fasting for your organization? Do you have a 24-hour prayer team going 365 days a year? If prayer is the only key, we should stop having on air campaigns and just pray? Ironically, the statistics show that God seems to bless those who are systematically making excellent fundraising presentations more than those who are not.
I have often heard, “We just let God bring us the funds that He wants to bring us.” After a decade and a half of doing this, I can tell you that God blesses the ones who do the best job of answering the donor’s questions, meeting the donor’s needs, asking for the money well, as well as praying for the event. Some charities earn more than others, and wise leadership will learn from those charities. You do your part wisely and well, and God will mysteriously show up and bless your part to a greater degree.
God works in tandem and in partnership with people who, yes pray, and then wisely do what is needed to stay the course and see victory. My only deduction is to think that God must want us to have a part in the daily battle, not just the prayer team.
For the record: As we talk about fundraising success, I am fully believing and expecting the funds our team will so fervently equip you to raise will be used for an altruistic life-saving cause. If I wanted to simply train money makers, I would do an infomercial. Our financial windfall is not our end, but rather our beginning, as we exchange this money for the staff, goods, or services needed to reach people with the message of Christ and the heart of Christian radio. It was Christian radio that saved my life.
Start the timer now. Don’t let the Facebook, Instant Message, SnapChat, and whatever else distract you today. The cute cat videos will be there long after the money is gone. Tell the receptionist that you can’t be disturbed for anything shy of a tornado for the next fifteen minutes. Start by asking God (prayer) to give you wisdom.
In tandem with a wise and rather systematic God, we partner to bring the most amount of resources to our charity. Our partnership means that He brings His best and we bring our best to the table. We then expect the donor to return their best. Anything less than hard work and hard prayer will deliver you half of your potential.
Your Assignment: This assignment is mandatory for you to track your own progress in your presentation skills. Please take out your smart phone and turn on the voice recorder. Imagine a wealthy philanthropist just met you in an elevator and requested to hear about your mission. He has ten thousand dollars in his pocket and has two minutes before your shared elevator lets him off at his stop. Don’t pre-plan it. Don’t rehearse. Record right now. Ready … set … go. If you do not have a recorder, write or type as much as you can in four minutes without editing. Scribble, write, type or record now.
